Tour Details

Private 2-day safari: your own guide, White Desert camping, Black Desert by 4x4

  • This private 2-day, 1-night overnight tour from Cairo takes you to Bahariya Oasis and the White Desert National Park, two of the most distinct landscapes in Egypt's Western Desert, with a private Egyptologist guide, private 4x4 transport, and one night of desert camping included.
  • The route runs roughly four hours from Cairo to Bahariya Oasis by air-conditioned car, then continues by 4x4 into the desert itself, with no other groups sharing your pace or your vehicle.
  • Along the way, you stop at El Haize, a small green oasis tucked into the sand, and Crystal Mountain, known for its quartz formations. From there the road opens onto Agabat Valley, where wind has cut the rock into ridges and hollows above gold dune fields, with the option to try sandboarding before you reach camp inside White Desert National Park.
  • You spend the night inside White Desert National Park, where wind-carved chalk towers turn orange, then pink, then white as the sun sets over the sand.
  • Dinner is cooked by local guides and served in the open, followed by a night under a sky with no city lights to compete with it—just tents, sand, and stars.
  • The next morning, breakfast is served at camp before a short walk to see the White Desert's best-known rock formations: Chicken Rock, Sphinx Rock, Whale Rock, and Rabbit Hill, each shaped by centuries of wind.
  • From there you continue by jeep into the Black Desert, where dark volcanic stone covers the hills in sharp contrast to the chalk-white landscape behind you.
  • A final stop at Bahariya Oasis's Salt Lake and palm gardens closes the loop before the roughly four-hour drive back to your hotel in Cairo.

Itinerary

Day1

Cairo to the White Desert: Crystal Mountain, Agabat Valley & Camping Under the Stars

  • Day 1 covers the drive from Cairo to Bahariya Oasis, a private 4x4 route through Crystal Mountain and Agabat Valley, and a night camping in the White Desert National Park under the stars.
  • Your Egyptologist guide meets you in Cairo, and you travel by private, air-conditioned vehicle roughly four hours to Bahariya Oasis, where lunch is served at a local oasis restaurant—no fixed schedule to match, just your own pace with your own guide and driver.
  • From there, a private 4x4 continues into the desert, stopping at El Haize, a small green oasis in the sand, then Crystal Mountain, known for its quartz formations, and Agabat Valley, where wind-cut rock rises above golden dunes, with the option to try sandboarding.
  • You reach White Desert National Park in time to watch the chalk formations turn orange, then pink, then white at sunset. Dinner is prepared by local guides and served in the open air, followed by a night camping under a sky with no city light to compete with it.
  • Meals: Lunch, Dinner
Day2

White Desert Sunrise to Black Desert: The Return to Cairo

  • Day 2 covers breakfast at camp, a walk among the White Desert's named rock formations, a private 4x4 crossing into the Black Desert, a stop at Bahariya Oasis's Salt Lake, and the drive back to Cairo.
  • You wake to breakfast served at the White Desert camp, then take a short walk to see the park's best-known formations up close: Chicken Rock, Sphinx Rock, Whale Rock, and Rabbit Hill, each carved by wind over centuries.
  • From there, your private 4x4 continues to the Black Desert, where dark volcanic stone covers the hills in sharp contrast to the chalk-white landscape you've just left behind.
  • On the way back toward Cairo, you stop once more at Bahariya Oasis to see the Salt Lake and walk through the palm gardens and fruit orchards that make the oasis green against the surrounding sand.
  • From there it's roughly four hours by private vehicle back to your hotel in Cairo, closing out the tour.
  • Meals: Breakfast

Notes

  • Weather & What to Bring: Desert temperatures swing widely — daytime can be hot even in cooler months, while nights in the White Desert get cold, especially between November and February. Bring layers, a warm jacket or fleece for the evening, and closed, comfortable shoes for walking on rock and sand. A hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen are recommended for daytime stops.
  • Physical Requirements: This tour involves walking on uneven rock and sand at some stops, plus several hours of driving on unpaved desert tracks by 4x4. It's suitable for most fitness levels, but travelers with mobility limitations or back problems should let us know in advance so we can advise accordingly.
  • Camping Conditions: You'll be sleeping in a shared-style desert camp with private tents, sleeping bags, and blankets provided. There are no showers or private bathroom facilities at the campsite—toilet facilities are basic. Bring any personal items you'd like for an overnight stay away from hotel amenities.
  • Itinerary Flexibility: The order of stops may be adjusted depending on weather, road conditions, or timing on the day, without affecting the overall experience or sites visited.

All FAQ about Egypt

Yes—the desert tracks beyond Bahariya Oasis require a 4x4 vehicle, which is why this tour switches from an air-conditioned car to a private 4x4 once you reach the oasis.

You sleep in private tents with sleeping bags and warm blankets provided, with dinner and breakfast served at camp. There are no showers or private bathroom facilities at the campsite, so it's a genuine outdoor camping experience rather than a glamping setup.

Bring layers for cold desert nights (especially November to February), comfortable closed shoes for walking on rock and sand, and a hat and sunscreen for daytime stops. Camping equipment — tents, sleeping bags, and blankets — is provided as part of the tour.

The tour involves several hours of driving on desert roads and one night of camping without hotel-style facilities, which suits most families comfortably, though very young children may find the driving hours tiring. Let your guide know your group's ages in advance so the pace can be adjusted.

The White Desert is made of wind-carved chalk formations that turn white, pink, and orange with the light, while the Black Desert gets its name from dark volcanic stone scattered across its hills. Both are part of Egypt's Western Desert and are visited on the same route between Bahariya Oasis and the White Desert National Park, usually in that order—White Desert on day one, Black Desert on the return.

Bahariya Oasis is about 4 hours from Cairo by private vehicle, and the White Desert National Park is a further drive into the desert from there by 4x4. Most private overnight tours cover the full round trip — Cairo to Bahariya Oasis to the White Desert and back — over 2 days and 1 night.
