Private 8-Day Egypt Desert Safari | Cairo, Dakhla Oasis & Gilf El Kebir

This 8-day private desert safari to Gilf El Kebir is one of our signature Egypt Desert Safari programs, taking you from Cairo into one of the most remote corners of Egypt's Western Desert, built for travelers who want more than a day trip to the dunes.

Gilf El Kebir sits close to the Libyan border and is only accessible with a private guide, a 4x4 convoy, and a military permit; this tour handles all three, so the only thing you need to plan is which dates work for your group.

The route starts in Dakhla Oasis, where you'll see the Roman-era Deir El Hagar Temple, the rock-cut tombs at Muzzawaqa, and the mud-brick streets of Al Qasr, before the desert opens up.

From there you're driving into the Great Sand Sea itself, past the Sugarloaf rock formation and the wind-carved Mud Lions, and on to Gilf El Kebir National Park, where sandstone cliffs rise straight out of the desert floor.

The highlight for most travelers is the Cave of Swimmers in Wadi Sura, one of the Sahara's most important prehistoric rock art sites, found alongside the more recently discovered Mestekawi Cave nearby.

Each day covers new ground: Wadi Assib and the Aqaba Pass, the acacia trees of Wadi Abd El Malik, and the scattered desert glass of the Silica Glass Area, ending with one last night beside Ain Dalla's spring before turning back toward Cairo the next morning.

Throughout, you're in a private vehicle with your own Egyptologist guide and driver, one of many Egypt Tours we run this way, with no fixed groups and no rushing between stops. To ask about dates or adjust the route, message us on WhatsApp.

Itinerary

Day1

Cairo to Dakhla Oasis — Deir El Hagar, Muzzawaqa & Al Qasr

Your private guide and driver pick you up from your Cairo hotel for the drive to Dakhla Oasis, a Western Desert oasis known for its Roman and Islamic-era sites. Your air-conditioned 4x4 is yours alone for the day.

The first stop is Deir El Hagar, a small but well-preserved 2nd-century Roman temple near Al Qasr, followed by Muzzawaqa, an ancient necropolis in the same oasis known for rock-cut tombs with Roman-period wall paintings.

After a private lunch, walk through Al Qasr's old Islamic quarter, with its narrow lanes and mud-brick houses. Late afternoon is free before your guide takes you to the Great Sand Sea's edge to watch the sunset with Bedouin tea at your own pace. Overnight at a desert lodge above Dakhla's rose-tinted cliffs.
Meals: Lunch, Dinner

Day2

Into the Great Sand Sea — Sugarloaf & the Mud Lions

After breakfast, your private guide and 4x4 head deeper into Egypt's Western Desert, into terrain most travelers never see.

The first landmark is the Sugarloaf, a striking sandstone formation with a natural arch carved by wind erosion, one of the most photographed spots on the route.

From there, you continue to the Mud Lions, a former lakebed reshaped over thousands of years into rock formations that resemble lions and other animals.

The rest of the day is spent crossing open desert toward Gilf El Kebir, the remote sandstone plateau that gives this safari its name, with stops on your own schedule to walk the dunes or take photos.

Dinner tonight is around a campfire, under one of the clearest night skies anywhere in the world.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day3

Wadi Mashi to Gilf El Kebir National Park & Wadi Assib

Your guide wakes you early for a sunrise start, driving through giant dunes and into Wadi Mashi, a desert valley that marks the approach to the plateau.

From here you enter Gilf El Kebir National Park, a protected area covering roughly 7,770 square kilometers of sandstone cliffs and rock formations rising nearly 1,000 meters above the surrounding desert floor.

The scale of the landscape here is different from anywhere else on the route: vertical rock walls, wide open panoramas, and almost no sign that anyone else has passed through.

Your private 4x4 continues to Wadi Assib, where camp is pitched for the night in the open desert, followed by a home-cooked Bedouin dinner under the stars.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day4

Aqaba Pass to the Cave of Swimmers & Mestekawi Cave

Today's route crosses the Aqaba Pass, with wide views over the western flank of the Gilf El Kebir plateau, before arriving at Wadi Sura, known as the Valley of Pictures.

Here you'll enter the Cave of Swimmers, one of the most significant prehistoric rock art sites in the Sahara, where more than a thousand paintings include figures appearing to swim, dating back roughly 8,000 years to when this desert was wetter grassland.

Nearby, the Mestekawi Cave, discovered in 2002, holds another well-preserved set of ancient rock art from the same period.

Your guide walks you through both sites before camp is set up in Wadi Sura for the night, with dinner under the stars.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day5

Wadi Abd El Malik & the Ancient Acacia Trees

After breakfast, your private 4x4 heads to Wadi Abd El Malik, one of the most striking valleys in Egypt's western desert and known for its scattered acacia trees, some of them centuries old and still standing against the surrounding dunes and rock walls.

Your guide gives you time here to walk the valley, take photos among the trees, and take in the silence of the Western Desert with no other travelers around.

In the evening, you'll share Bedouin tea with your crew before dinner, spending your second night camping under the open desert sky.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day6

The Great Sand Sea's Silica Glass Area

After breakfast and a morning drive, you'll reach the Silica Glass Area, a stretch of the Great Sand Sea scattered with natural yellow and green glass shards formed an estimated 26 million years ago; researchers still debate exactly how, which makes it one of the more scientifically interesting stops for geology-minded travelers.

Your guide gives you time to walk the area and see the glass fragments up close before heading to camp for the evening.

Tonight's stop brings another round of Bedouin hospitality, with tea, a home-cooked dinner, and the same clear desert sky as the nights before.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day7

Ain Dalla Spring — Your Last Night in the Desert

After breakfast, your private 4x4 heads to Ain Dalla, a natural spring shaded by date palms in the middle of the Western Desert, with no other settlement for miles around.

The spring's warm, mineral-rich water is open for swimming, or you can simply relax at its edge and take in the quiet after a week of desert driving.

This is your final night on tour, so your guide and crew mark it with a proper Bedouin dinner and tea by the fire, sharing stories from the trip before you settle in under the stars one last time.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day8

Return Drive to Cairo

After breakfast you will begin to drive back to Cairo. Your amazing Egypt desert safari is drawing to a conclusion. Eight great days of adventure have passed, traversing the wildest and most remote terrain of Gilf El Kebir, discovering prehistoric paintings, secluded valleys, and dramatic desert views.

Return home with one of Egypt’s ultimate experiences locked in your memory.

Notes

Physical requirements. This tour covers long daily drives on rough desert terrain, camping in tents for six nights, and no access to medical facilities once you leave Dakhla Oasis. No hiking or special fitness is required; you're seated in the 4x4 for most of each day, but travelers should be comfortable with basic desert camping (no running water at some camps and temperature swings between day and night) and confirm any health conditions with us before booking.

Permits and travel restrictions.

Entry to Gilf El Kebir is controlled: it sits inside a restricted military area close to the Libyan border, and no group can enter without official government approval. We arrange these permits as part of your booking, but they depend on government approval and can occasionally affect exact dates or route details. We'll confirm your permit status before final booking and let you know immediately if anything changes.

Itinerary changes. The order and timing of stops can shift due to weather, road conditions, or updated permit requirements from the Egyptian authorities. Your guide will always aim to cover every site listed in the itinerary, adjusting the sequence rather than dropping a destination, and will explain any change on the day it happens.

Hotel and lodge check-in. Your one night in Dakhla Oasis follows standard hotel check-in (usually from 2:00 PM) and check-out (around 11:00 AM) times. Desert camp nights don't follow a fixed schedule; camp is set up and taken down around your day's driving plan, not a set clock.

Dress code. Light, breathable clothing in pale colors works best for desert heat and sun exposure; a warm layer is needed for cold desert nights. There are no religious sites with strict dress requirements on this specific route, but modest clothing is still recommended when passing through local villages like Al Qasr.

Children on this tour. This tour is not designed for young children, given the remoteness, physical distances between medical help, and lack of standard facilities at desert camps. If you're traveling with older children or teenagers, let us know in advance so we can advise honestly on suitability.

All FAQ about Egypt

All FAQ about Egypt

Yes, since every departure is private, the route, pace, and length can be adjusted before booking. Common changes include adding extra oasis stops, combining this safari with a Nile cruise or Cairo extension, or adjusting the number of desert nights to fit your schedule.

This tour isn't designed for young children, given the remote terrain, distance from medical facilities, and lack of standard camp amenities. Older children or teenagers may be suitable depending on fitness and comfort with basic camping; let us know your group's ages in advance so we can advise honestly.

The trip includes one night at a desert lodge in Dakhla Oasis on half board, followed by six nights camping in fully equipped desert camps on full board. All camping equipment is provided, so there's nothing extra to bring or rent for the nights spent in the open desert.

October through March is the best window, when daytime desert temperatures are manageable and nights are cool rather than freezing. Summer temperatures in this part of the Western Desert regularly exceed 40°C, and spring sandstorms (the Khamseen) can disrupt travel, so most operators avoid scheduling trips outside the cooler months.

Gilf El Kebir is remote, but the route is run through licensed operators with permits, GPS, and experienced desert guides, and thousands of travelers visit safely each season. The main risks come from the terrain and distance from help, which is why the trip runs as a fully guided, private 4x4 convoy rather than independent travel.

Yes. Gilf El Kebir is a restricted military zone near the Libyan border, and all visitors need an official government permit to enter. Aten Tours arranges this as part of your booking, though approval depends on the Egyptian authorities and can occasionally affect exact travel dates.
