Your guide picks you up from your Alexandria hotel and drives you roughly 120 kilometers south into the Western Desert to Wadi El Natrun, the site where Christian monasticism began. Of the fifty monasteries once built here, four remain active today, and you'll visit all of them in a private, self-paced order.
You'll start the Wadi El Natrun monasteries tour from Alexandria at Deir al-Baramus, the oldest and most remote of the four, then continue to Deir Anba Bishoi, where the monastery's founder is still entombed. From there you'll visit Deir Abu Maqar, the largest of the four with a working community of over 100 monks, before finishing at Deir El-Suryani, the smallest of the group and known for its detailed frescoes.
After the four monasteries, you'll stop for lunch before the drive back to Alexandria, with a photo stop at the Qaitbay Citadel and the Bibliotheca Alexandrina on the return.
