Visit the Four Surviving Coptic Monasteries, Birthplace of Christian Monasticism

  • This private day tour takes you to Wadi El Natrun, a monastic site in Egypt's Western Desert regarded as the birthplace of Christian monasticism, visiting all four surviving Coptic monasteries in a single day. Your guide and vehicle are reserved for your group only, so you move through each site at your own pace rather than a fixed schedule, and lunch at a local restaurant is included.
  • The tour departs from your Alexandria hotel for the 120-kilometer drive south, stopping first at Deir al-Baramus, the oldest and most remote of the four; then Deir Anba Bishoi, where the monastery's founder is still entombed; Deir Abu Maqar, the largest working community with over 100 monks; and finally Deir El-Suryani, the smallest and most architecturally compact. On the return drive into Alexandria, you'll stop for photos at the Qaitbay Citadel and the Bibliotheca Alexandrina.

Itinerary

Day1

Alexandria to Wadi El Natrun: The Four Monasteries

  • Your guide picks you up from your Alexandria hotel and drives you roughly 120 kilometers south into the Western Desert to Wadi El Natrun, the site where Christian monasticism began. Of the fifty monasteries once built here, four remain active today, and you'll visit all of them in a private, self-paced order.
  • You'll start at Deir al-Baramus, the oldest and most remote of the four, then continue to Deir Anba Bishoi, where the monastery's founder is still entombed. From there you'll visit Deir Abu Maqar, the largest of the four with a working community of over 100 monks, before finishing at Deir El-Suryani, the smallest of the group and known for its detailed frescoes.
  • After the four monasteries, you'll stop for lunch before the drive back to Alexandria, with a photo stop at the Qaitbay Citadel and the Bibliotheca Alexandrina on the return.

Notes

  • Please dress modestly when visiting the monasteries—shoulders and knees covered are appreciated as a sign of respect at these active religious sites. Comfortable walking shoes are recommended, as the day involves walking across monastery grounds and some uneven, unpaved paths.
  • The tour is approximately 8 hours round-trip from Alexandria, including the drive to and from Wadi El Natrun. Some monasteries may occasionally be closed to visitors for religious observances; your guide will confirm access on the day and adjust the visiting order if needed.
  • This tour is not recommended for travelers with limited mobility, given the walking involved between and within the monastery complexes.
