A One-Day Trip to Edfu's Temple of Horus and the Twin Temple of Kom Ombo

This private day trip from Luxor covers two of Egypt's best-preserved Ptolemaic temples in one day: the Temple of Horus at Edfu and the twin sanctuary of Kom Ombo. It suits travelers who want real history covered properly, without a group tour setting the pace, and who'll be back at their Luxor hotel by evening.

Your guide, a licensed Egyptologist, meets you at your hotel for the one-and-a-half-hour drive south along the Nile Valley. Edfu comes first. Centuries of sand buried the temple, and that's why its pylon, courtyard, and inner sanctuary are still largely intact. Then it's on to Kom Ombo, a temple split down the middle into two matching halves, one for Sobek, the crocodile god, and one for Horus the Elder. Lunch at a local restaurant breaks up the day before the drive back to Luxor.

There's no backtracking on this route. Edfu and Kom Ombo sit along the same road south toward Aswan, so the day runs in one direction the whole way. A private vehicle and a guide working with your group only mean you spend more time wherever a temple catches your interest and less time waiting on anyone else. It's one of several Egypt day tours we run out of Luxor, all built the same way: private car, private guide, and no fixed schedule but yours. Questions about pickup or timing? Itinerary

Day1

Luxor to Edfu and Kom Ombo Temples

Your day starts with pickup from your hotel or house in Luxor by your guide from Aten Tours. The drive south to Edfu runs about an hour and a half along the Nile Valley road. At Edfu, your guide walks you through the Temple of Horus, pointing out the reliefs and inscriptions that survived because sand buried the site for centuries.

From Edfu, the route continues to Kom Ombo, a riverside town on the road toward Aswan. Its temple is unusual for holding two complete sets of halls and sanctuaries side by side, built so neither Sobek nor Horus the Elder took precedence over the other. Your guide walks you through both sides before you head back north toward Luxor.

Back in Luxor, lunch at a local restaurant closes out the day before your driver drops you at your hotel.

Inclusions/Exclusions

Inclusions

  • Hotel or house pickup anywhere in Luxor — no meeting point to find on your own.
  • A private, air-conditioned vehicle for the whole day, so you're not sharing a minibus or waiting on other passengers.
  • Entrance tickets for both Edfu and Kom Ombo temples are already covered in your price—no ticket lines to sort out yourself.
  • An English-speaking guide who stays with you throughout, explaining the temples as you go rather than leaving you to read a plaque.
  • Bottled water is kept on hand in the vehicle, since the drive runs through open desert road with nowhere to stop and buy any.
  • All taxes and service charges, so the price you're quoted is the price you pay.
  • Lunch at a local restaurant in Luxor after you're back, rather than a rushed stop mid-rout
