Private Day Tour to Dendera & Abydos Temples | Safaga Shore Excursion

This private day tour to Dendera and Abydos temples from Safaga Port takes you deep into Upper Egypt to see two of the country's best-preserved sanctuaries, dedicated to the goddess Hathor and the god Osiris.

Built for cruise passengers docked at Safaga who want more than a beach day, the tour runs with a private Egyptologist guide for the full day on the road.

Your guide meets you at Safaga Port and drives you inland to Abydos first, where the Temple of Seti I holds the Abydos King List, a carved record of pharaohs running from Menes to Seti I's own reign.

Few visitors get this far south, so the site tends to stay quiet even at midday. After lunch at a local restaurant, you continue to Dendera, where the Temple of Hathor still carries its roof reliefs and the famous Dendera Zodiac ceiling, one of the clearest surviving records of ancient Egyptian astronomy carved in stone.

The order works because Abydos sits further from Safaga than Dendera, so visiting it first avoids doubling back. From Abydos to Dendera, then back to Safaga Port, the loop covers both temples in one unhurried sequence with a private vehicle and driver throughout. Message us on WhatsApp before your cruise date to confirm pickup timing with your ship's schedule.

Itinerary

Day1

Dandara and Abydos Temples

Morning, Pickup & Abydos Temple
Your Egyptologist guide meets you at Safaga Port and drives you inland toward Abydos, one of Egypt's oldest sacred cities. The main stop is the Temple of Seti I, built between the 1st and 30th Dynasties and famous for the Abydos King List, a wall carving naming pharaohs from Menes through Seti I.

Inside, seven chapels honor different gods, including Osiris, Isis, and Horus, each with relief work still holding much of its original color. Abydos sees far fewer visitors than Luxor or Cairo, so you'll often have entire chapels to yourselves, with your guide explaining the layout and symbolism as you go.

Midday, Lunch
After Abydos, you stop for lunch at a local restaurant before continuing to Dendera. The meal gives you a break from the heat and a chance to try regional Egyptian dishes before the second temple visit.

Afternoon, Dendera Temple
From lunch, the drive continues to Dendera, home to the Temple of Hathor, goddess of love, music, and joy. Construction here spans centuries, from around 2250 BC through the Ptolemaic period, and the temple is one of the best preserved in Egypt. Highlights include the astronomical ceiling carvings known as the Dendera Zodiac,

the underground crypts and the Hathor-headed columns lining the hypostyle hall. Your guide walks you through the temple's religious and astronomical significance, including the reliefs known as the Dendera Light.

Evening, Return to Safaga Port
Once you've finished at Dendera, your driver takes you back to Safaga Port in time for your ship's departure. The return retraces the route directly, without additional stops, so timing stays predictable against your cruise schedule.

Notes

  • Pickup Timing: Pickup is coordinated with your cruise ship's docking schedule at Safaga Port. Confirm your exact arrival time in advance so your guide is waiting when you disembark.
  • Physical Requirements: Both temples involve walking on uneven stone floors and some steps. The tour suits most fitness levels, but let us know in advance if mobility is a concern.
  • Dress Code: Modest clothing is recommended for both temples; shoulders and knees covered is the safest choice, especially in the open courtyards.
  • Itinerary Changes: Visiting order or timing may shift slightly depending on your ship's schedule, site conditions, or seasonal closures. The same two temples and lunch stop stay fixed regardless.
  • Return Timing: This is a long day out and back. Plan for a full day away from the port before your ship's scheduled departure.
