Tour Details

A Private Guided Day Trip Through Alexandria's Fortresses, Library, and Coastline

  • This private one-day tour takes you from Cairo to Alexandria, Egypt's Mediterranean coastal city, covering the Catacombs of Kom El Shoqafa, the Roman Amphitheatre, the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, Pompey's Pillar, a photo stop at Qaitbay Citadel, the Royal Jewelry Museum, and Montaza Garden, with lunch included at a local restaurant. Your Egyptologist guide and air-conditioned vehicle pick you up at your Cairo hotel; the drive covers about 220 km each way, roughly 2.5 to 3 hours depending on traffic.
  • The day starts at the Catacombs of Kom El Shoqafa, a three-level underground necropolis discovered by accident in 1900. Inside, Egyptian funerary gods like Sobek and Anubis appear carved in Roman dress, and the Triclinium—a rock-cut banquet table and chairs—shows where mourners once held funeral feasts.
  • From there, the Roman Amphitheatre, dating to the 2nd century AD, once seated up to 800 spectators across its marble galleries and mosaic floors. Nearby, Pompey's Pillar rises from the ruins of the ancient Serapeum temple complex as the tallest Roman column standing in Egypt today.
  • The Bibliotheca Alexandrina, a modern library built as a tribute to the ancient Great Library, anchors the afternoon before a photo stop at Qaitbay Citadel—built in 1477 on the exact site of the Lighthouse of Alexandria, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.
  • The day winds down at the Royal Jewelry Museum and Montaza Garden, a former royal seaside park with views of Montaza Palace, with a stop at Stanley Bridge for a walk along the coast before the drive back to Cairo.

Itinerary

Day1

Alexandria Historical Sites: Catacombs, Amphitheatre, and the Bibliotheca

  • Your Egyptologist guide picks you up from your Cairo hotel in the morning for the drive to Alexandria—about 220 km, roughly 2.5 to 3 hours depending on traffic.
  • The day opens underground, at the Catacombs of Kom El Shoqafa: a three-level necropolis discovered by accident in 1900, where Egyptian, Greek, and Roman styles blend in the carvings, including the rock-cut triclinium banquet hall.
  • Above ground, the Roman amphitheater once seated up to 800 people in its 2nd-century AD marble galleries, a short distance from Pompey's Pillar, the tallest standing Roman column in Egypt. At the Bibliotheca Alexandrina—a modern tribute to the ancient Great Library—you'll have time to explore before a photo stop at Qaitbay Citadel, built on the site of the ancient lighthouse of Alexandria.
  • The Royal Jewelry Museum and Montaza Garden round out the afternoon, with views of Montaza Palace and a coastal walk at Stanley Bridge before heading back. Lunch is included at a local restaurant, and you'll be dropped back at your Cairo hotel by evening.

Notes

  • Please book with your passport details ready—entrance to sites like the Citadel of Qaitbay may require ID verification. This tour is not recommended for travelers with limited mobility, as the Catacombs of Kom El Shoqafa involve descending narrow stairways to the underground levels, and the Citadel of Qaitbay has uneven stone flooring and ramparts without full railings. Comfortable walking shoes are recommended for all three sites.
  • The drive between Cairo and Alexandria is approximately 220 km each way (roughly 2.5–3 hours depending on traffic), so please plan for a full day, typically departing early morning and returning in the evening.
  • If you'd prefer to swap out any of the listed sites, let us know before your tour date and we'll adjust the itinerary where possible.
  • Children are welcome on this tour; however, the underground catacombs and citadel stairways may not suit very young children or strollers.
